November 16, 2015Guest Blog: Celebrate #IDPD with Sodexo and Empower People of All Abilities
December 3, 2015By Autumn McReynolds, Employment Brand Sourcing Manager
Do you know how many people have some type of disability? It may surprise you to learn that it’s over one billion people worldwide and that 70% of those are non-apparent.
I and my fellow members of the Sodexo Organization for disAbilities Resources (SOAR) work to raise awareness and provide education/resources for not only employees with disabilities but also their allies to help create an inclusive culture that helps all our team members thrive and reach their full potential.
To continue our celebration of National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), here is the third post in our 4-part series, highlighting the important work Sodexo SOAR members and employees are doing to make a difference in their communities. Catch up by reading Part 1 and Part 2!
Project SEARCH at St. Joseph Hospital
Project SEARCH is a high school transition program that provides on-the-job training, classroom instruction and career exploration for students with disabilities. Sodexo at St. Joseph Hospital in Nashua, NH continues to host Project SEARCH interns and have successfully graduated seven classes thus far!
“This program is a win-win for Sodexo operators. They get to work with and train the interns based on our training programs and job flows. We get to see them in action and can offer them a position if we have openings when they graduate,” said Mark McKenna, Sodexo General Manager – Multi-Services at St. Joseph Hospital.
Mark, who is also Chair of the Business Advisory Council at St. Joseph’s, said they work with community merchants and businesses to support, interview and hopefully hire the interns upon completion of the program.
This is just one example of how Sodexo employees are supporting people with disabilities, and we will continue to publish more throughout the month. Stay tuned for Part 4 of this series next week, and follow our dedicated Pinterest board for additional content, facts and much more.
