Employees must possess, at minimum, a valid Class D driver’s license to operate a motor vehicle in NYS at the time of appointment & continuously maintain it thereafter.
SUMMER SEASONAL POSITIONS
Navigational season runs from spring until fall, with exact opening and closing dates shifting year-to-year. Recruitment begins in the spring and is continuous until all navigation seasonal positions have been filled.
Canal Structure Operator
Canal Structure Operators are responsible for assisting Chief Lock Operators in operating and maintaining canal structures. Canal Structure Operators interact with recreational and commercial boaters, and are responsible for recording specific operational data, as well as directing boaters appropriately for safe passage through locks.
Minimum Qualifications: 1. six months of experience in the operation and assembly or the operation and maintenance of mechanical, electrical, automotive, hydraulic, or diesel machinery OR
2. six months of experience working on a canal, of which 50% of your duties must have included working at a canal lock and/or lift bridge OR
3. a certificate of completion from a BOCES or a post-high school program in electrical maintenance; electrical construction; or mechanical, hydraulic, automotive, or diesel repair or technology OR 4. six college semester credit hours in electrical construction; electrical maintenance; or in hydraulic, mechanical, automotive, or diesel repair or technology OR
5. possession of a New York State electrician’s license and current registration.

Marine Helper
Marine Helpers assist in the on or off-shore maintenance of various floating plants and dredge vessels. Marine Helpers may also assist in levee and/or channel embankment repair.
Minimum Qualifications: Must be at least 18 years of age and physically capable of performing the duties assigned to the position. A valid License to operate a motor vehicle in New York State is required. There are no education or experience requirements.

Tug Captain
Tug Captains operate and pilot a tug vessel at the work zone and are responsible for supervising a crew aboard a tug, including maintaining time records and tracking supplies. Tug Captains are responsible for the maintenance, light repairs, and general upkeep of historical tug vessels.
Minimum Qualifications: Requirements vary based on needs, but may at minimum require a valid United States Coast Guard license, with a 100 Ton Master of Vessels for Inland Waters and Towing Endorsement.

Canal Helper
Canal Helpers assist in the operation and maintenance of canal equipment and structures and assist in maintaining grounds and facilities at historic canal sites. Canal Helpers may also assist in the operation of lift bridges, located across New York State.
Minimum Qualifications: There are no education or experience requirements. Applicants may be required to possess a valid NYS driver’s license.

Marine Engineer
Marine Engineers operate and maintain engine rooms and other mechanical equipment, including routine maintenance and complete overhauls of main and auxiliary engines and other machinery used on vessels.
Minimum Qualifications: Must have four years of experience in the operation, maintenance and repair of diesel or internal combustion engines. A valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State is required.

Deckhand Supervisor
Deckhand Supervisors supervise and/or train a crew of Marine Helpers in on-shore, dredge-related work, which includes operating heavy equipment on and around levees to ensure a smooth dredging process. Deckhand Supervisors both supervise and participate in connecting and dismantling shore pipeline with the assistance of a bulldozer.
Minimum Qualifications: Candidates must have had two years of experience as a Marine Helper AND a valid License to operate a motor vehicle in New York State.
WINTER SEASON POSITIONS
Winter season is when major repairs to Canal structures are performed. Recruitment begins in the fall and is continuous until all navigation seasonal positions have been filled.
Facility Operations Assistant 1
Facility Operations Assistants may work independently or on a crew to assist in maintaining canal equipment and structures, as well as the grounds and facilities at historic canal sites. A Facility Operations Assistant may be responsible for running heavy equipment, including commercial riding mowers and forklifts.
Minimum Qualifications: Must be at least 18 years of age and physically capable of performing the duties and assigned to the position. A driver license or Commercial Driver License appropriate to the types of vehicles operated may be required for some positions.
